Are you pre-treating?
The Pre-Treatment Regulations, part of the Landfill Directive, became effective at the end of October 2007, requiring all non-hazardous waste to be pre-treated before final disposal to landfill. Pre-treatment can include physical, chemical, thermal or biological processes, but it can also be as simple as segregation of recyclable materials. As a waste producer you are responsible for ensuring that your non-hazardous waste is effectively pre-treated, either by you at source or by your nominated waste contractor, before it goes to landfill. If you pass the responsibility for adequate pre-treatment to your contractor, you must be able to provide evidence that this takes place, and you may be charged a premium for this service. The better alternative is to pre-treat your own waste on site at the point of generation. Blue Sky Recycling can offer advice on the best method to ensure you remain compliant, whichever route you choose.
Hazardous Waste Registration
The Hazardous Waste Regulations which came into effect in 2005 require all industrial producers of hazardous waste to register their premises with the Environment Agency on an annual basis. This applies to all industrial type premises including factories, warehouses, distribution centres and workshops. Non-industrial premises such as offices and shops must register if they expect to produce more than 200kg of hazardous waste per year. Blue Sky Recycling can help you by registering your site, and advising on the best and most cost-effective methods of storage, removal and disposal.
